In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes.

Twenty years from now you will
be more disappointed
by the things that you didn’t do
than the ones you did do.

So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore.
Dream.
Discover.

Drop in.

Leave a comment

2011-2012 @ below the surface

Vermont,

F600EXR + Fuji housing

Capitol Peak   1 comment

2012.07.13 @ Pitkin, Colorado

Summit: 14,130 feet

Round hike: 17 miles

Elevation gain: 5,300 feet

Difficulty: Class 4

Duration: 2 days, camp at Capitol Lake

Located in the Elk Mountains in southern Pitkin County west of Aspen, within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, Capitol Peak (14,130 ft) is one of the most difficult of Colorado’s fourteeners to climb. The only non-technical route, the Northeast Ridge, requires crossing the famously exposed “Knife Edge,” the northeast ridge of Capitol.

gears in the 70L backpack, clothes, camera tripod, trekking poles, and food are not shown in this picture. 40lbs of load

trail starts with a smooth elevation gain in aspen forest, it must be really pretty in early Oct when the leaves all turning bright yellow.

entering White River wilderness area

light shower on the way, hope the big rock won’t be wet tomorrow

cattle in the wilderness area

the trail opens up to a grassy slope, with Capitol Peak standing ahead

booming wild flowers in the woods, ascending

Capitol Lake, right below Capitol peak, elevation 11,700 ft

set camp by the Capitol Lake, couldn’t think of a better place than this

early sleep (9pm) for the early start (3am). It was a windy night, good rest but not much of sleeping…

5:30am, already hiked 2 hours and at the other side of Capitol Peak, ascending…

Mollie looking for cairns, the trail is poorly marked

we lost track of route, spent 2 hours on the cliff wall, class 4+ ups and downs, such a waste of time and energy…

morning glory

had to cross a large area of snow patch, I can hear the water running underneath the rocks

Marmot, little naughty dude who chews everything, including unattended tents and sleeping bags.

a hiker just got on the edge, ascending. Long way to go…

K2 is the first big challenge, one of the most difficult and expose 13ers, need to use both hands for the climbing. We summited it with no problem.

look back to the “K2”. Pay attention to the hikes in the lower left corner of the picture and you can have a sense of the scale… and the 2,000ft vertical drop straight down…

we took a break and look down from the edge, a heart shape glacier lake~

Mollie and me, before attempting the “knife edge”

a group of day hikers, crazy….

I am holding on the knife edge, looking for my next step

the “knife edge”

due to limitation of time and energy, we made a hard call, to turn back with out summiting Capitol Peak. I knew I will come back for sure.

Mollie descending a cliff wall

finally, climbing turns to hiking, hands are free

wild flower on the slope of Capitol Peak

back to the campsite, relaxing….

Capitol Peak is voted the most difficult 14ers in Colorado by local climbing community.
